IDRO’s Reader Module is Revolutionizing Space Constrained Devices
The ultra-compact IDRO900ME-T, built with the Impinj E310 RAIN RFID reader chip, is one of the smallest RAIN RFID reader modules on the market.
As the use of RAIN RFID to wirelessly track items increases, the devices enabling this technology are getting smaller — and it’s easy to understand why. Small devices’ portability makes them easy to use and immediately accessible in environments with large physical spaces, such as sprawling manufacturing facilities and multi-story warehouses.
While customers have embraced these increasingly smaller devices, their manufacturers have faced a challenge: finding a RAIN RFID reader module compact enough to fit inside while still meeting performance requirements.
Module developer and Impinj partner IDRO Co. Ltd. has met this challenge with the IDRO900ME-T RAIN RFID reader module. At only 27 x 25 x 4.2 mm, the IDRO900ME-T is considerably smaller than IDRO’s previous generation RAIN RFID reader module, the IDRO900MI, which measures 40.5 x 35.8 x 7.4 mm. The IDRO900ME-T fits easily inside the industry’s smallest RAIN printers, as well as other small RAIN devices such as handheld readers.
Compact, powerful, and enabled by Impinj
The secret to the success of the ultra-compact IDRO900ME-T is the Impinj E310 RAIN RFID reader chip. Designed specifically for use in small, cost-effective RAIN RFID printers and handheld readers, the E310 is 80% smaller, delivers 50% lower chip power consumption, and offers 7 dB better receive sensitivity than Impinj’s previous generation reader chip.
IDRO has chosen to use the Impinj E310 RAIN RFID reader chip in the IDRO900ME-T because of its high performance and reliability.
“We have consistently found Impinj’s ICs to meet and exceed our performance expectations,” said Yanggi Kang, IDRO’s chief executive officer, “which is why we continue to rely on them exclusively for our RAIN RFID solutions.”
While the Impinj E310’s performance level is typically sufficient for modules powering small printers and handhelds, manufacturers can easily upgrade to a higher performing module if their customers require a device with higher sensitivity and faster reading speeds. Since the entire Impinj E Family of RAIN RFID reader chips all share the same small footprint, the IDRO900ME-T can easily accommodate Impinj E510, E710, or even E910 RAIN RFID reader chips, depending on performance requirements. All E Family reader chips are pin- and software compatible with the E310, allowing for straightforward upgrades.

Workers in a manufacturing environment, for example, can use portable, IDRO900ME-T-powered RAIN RFID printers to create RAIN RFID tags anywhere on the production floor, apply them to tools and parts, and track work in progress. Retailers can print tags on the spot for use in inventory management, sales, and returns. And logistics managers can generate shipping labels to track their items throughout their supply chain, without the need to repeatedly recharge the device.
