Find Out the Future of RAIN RFID

The RAIN RFID Alliance 2019 Americas meeting is right around the corner.

It has been fifteen years since the UHF Gen2 RFID standard was developed and the first products hit the market. In 2014, the term “RAIN RFID” was introduced by the RAIN RFID Alliance to differentiate RAIN from the broadly used term “RFID” which refers to many different frequencies and standards. Where do we stand today on the technology adoption curve and what needs to be done in order to make RAIN RFID as common—or more common—than barcodes? This is a key focus of the RAIN RFID Alliance and will be discussed at the upcoming RAIN RFID Alliance - 2019 Americas Meeting on March 5-7  in Memphis, Tennessee.

But, what is RAIN RFID exactly?

RAIN RFID is a passive (battery-free) wireless technology that connects billions of everyday items to the Internet, enabling businesses and consumers to identify, locate, authenticate, and engage each item.

RAIN is the fastest growing segment of the RFID market and uses a single, global standard: UHF Gen 2 (ISO/IEC 18000-63). RAIN has connected over billions of items to help businesses with inventory management, patient safety, asset tracking, and item authentication. By providing internet connectivity to and real-time information about everyday items such as apparel, medical supplies, automobile parts, food and more, RAIN RFID enables the true Internet of Things.

What is the RAIN RFID Alliance?

In 2014, Google, Intel, Impinj, Smartrac, and AIM founded the RAIN RFID Alliance to promote awareness and increase the adoption of RAIN RFID in business and consumer applications. The RAIN RFID Alliance is similar to other wireless technology organizations, such as the WiFi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, and NFC Forum.

The RAIN RFID Alliance has more than 150 member companies comprised of global brands including Cardinal Health, Decathlon, FedEx Freight, Impinj, Intel, and L'Oreal. Together, members drive the RAIN Alliance’s mission to enable businesses and consumers to identify, locate, authenticate, and engage items in our everyday world.

Will we see you there?

Impinj is excited to be a part of the RAIN RFID Alliance 2019 Americas Meeting. This year’s event takes place March 5-7th, at the FedEx Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis. It is a great time to learn what is happening in the RAIN industry. Participants have the opportunity to engage in peer-level networking, thought leadership, and other activities that shape the future of the industry.
