CEO Letter: Join in Opposing Changes to US 900 MHz Frequency Band
FCC seeks comments on proposed changes to the 900MHz radio band which threaten RAIN RFID usage. Impinj CEO Chris Diorio calls for industry action.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is currently soliciting comments on a petition from NextNav, a for-profit company, to change longstanding spectrum allocations in the 900 MHz ISM band used by RAIN RFID.
If approved, NextNav’s proposal would have significant, negative ramifications for those already using the radio band, including our RAIN community. Existing and future RAIN deployments across industries including retail, logistics, healthcare and government are at risk. Read more about the issues and why the FCC must consider the benefit that RAIN RFID delivers to people and organizations around the world in an article I wrote for RFID Journal.
Take action now by submitting comments
It is critical that the FCC hears from our partners and customers across the RAIN industry who can attest to the value that RAIN delivers, as well as the significant, negative impact a decision favorable to NextNav would have on the incumbents.
If you make, use, or sell RAIN RFID products or solutions, I encourage you to affirm the importance of the 900 MHz band to the FCC:
- Join the RAIN Alliance’s coordinated effort to prevent this change by contacting the RAIN Alliance president, [email protected].
- Submit comments directly to the FCC by September 5, 2024.
- Reach out to your state’s US senators and federal representatives.
Our industry has a long history of innovation and investment in RAIN RFID, underpinned by our ability to reliably use the 900 MHz frequency band. Impinj is working closely with the RAIN Alliance to develop an industry-level response to the NextNav petition. As I said in RFID Journal, Impinj will do our part to keep the ISM band available for RAIN usage so our industry can continue its journey to connect every item in our everyday world.
