Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Impinj for Innovative UHF RFID Transceiver, the Indy™ R1000 Chip
Based on its recent analysis of the radio-frequency identification (RFID) market, Frost & Sullivan presents Impinj, Inc. with the 2008 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Emerging Technology of the Year, for the company’s revolutionary ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID transceiver, the Indy™ R1000 chip.
Seattle, WA September 16, 2008 - Based on its recent analysis of the radio-frequency identification (RFID) market, Frost & Sullivan presents Impinj, Inc. with the 2008 Global Frost & Sullivan Award for Emerging Technology of the Year, for the company’s revolutionary ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID transceiver, the Indy™ R1000 chip. It has received industry-wide recognition and endorsement for its positive impact on reader performance and cost-effectiveness. The technology enables integration of complex and discrete reader components on a single chip measuring approximately 8mm x 8mm, making possible the use of RFID technology in new applications with varied form factors and cost considerations.
“The innovation of the Indy R1000 technology lies in its ability to integrate onto a single chip, 90 percent of the components required for a reader radio, delivering unprecedented performance, integration and cost-effectiveness to a worldwide customer base,” explains Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Keith Robinson. “The chip has been developed to address both long-range reader applications and short-range embedded module requirements – a technical versatility that makes the Impinj Indy R1000 chip a universal choice from dock door readers to multi port fixed readers to short-range handheld readers.”
Impinj has a significant competitive edge due to its extensive presence across the RFID value chain. The Indy R1000 adds to the company’s panoptic product portfolio by incorporating a proven, high-performance, highly-integrated reader radio chip. Impinj’s technical expertise across different points in a supply chain enables development of integrated solutions that ease consumer adoption of RFID technology.
Impinj’s strategic technical alliances with leading industry participants provide customers with the flexibility to support multiple enterprise and middleware software solutions. The protocol firmware and programming support are other significant features that protect existing consumer investments and ensure faster upgradeability and reduced time to market. Impinj’s technology development approach reflects a sound understanding of challenges faced by the end-user in RFID implementations.
“The company’s global growth outlook is evident in the Indy R1000 chip’s compatibility with key standards and frequency ranges worldwide,” notes Robinson. “The product solution ensures compliance with both ISO-18000-6C and EPCglobal Gen 2 standards, and supports regional regulatory requirements, including FCC, ETSI, PRC, Korea and Japan.”
The success of the Impinj transceiver chip is corroborated by the high market acceptance of the technology in a span of less than one year. Impinj’s customers, namely reader manufacturers, benefit from increased time to market due to the additional development tools and firmware that are included with the Indy R1000 solution. Impinj expects more than 40 reader manufacturers to launch products based on the Indy R1000 transceiver chip in 2008. The solution’s global operability has enabled penetration into markets across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
Frost & Sullivan endorses the market potential of Impinj’s transceiver chip technology due to the solution’s industry-wide impact of decreasing reader hardware costs and increasing RFID adoption rates across application segments in the future. Ease of deployment, integration with existing enterprise software applications, functionality in dense reader mode (DRM), and upgradeability through protocol firmware are some of the value-added features that result from Impinj’s customer-centric outlook.
The technology design also overcomes challenges of complex reader discrete components, high manufacturing costs, high power consumption, and readability issues in difficult environments. The Indy R1000 solution holds a significant competitive advantage due to the higher integration in a single chip and the flexible functionality across different applications and usage models.
For its continued commitment to the RFID industry and sustainable technical advantage for the future, Impinj is the worthy recipient of the 2008 Emerging Technology of the Year. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated technological superiority within its industry. It recognizes the ability of the company to successfully develop or introduce a new technology, formulate a well-designed product family, and make significant product performance contributions to the industry.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
