Seattle, WA April 8, 2005 - RFID pioneers Intermec Technologies Corp. and Impinj Inc. today announced a technology collaboration designed to bring the business benefits of EPCglobal Generation 2 RFID (radio frequency identification) to industries worldwide. Intermec and Impinj are among the first companies to introduce Generation 2 products. Impinj has announced the availability of MonzaTM, its EPCglobal Generation 2-compliant RFID tag silicon, designed to fully support all features of the Gen 2 specification and to allow customers to obtain maximum system performance. In recent weeks Intermec introduced its IF5 EPCglobal Gen 2-compatible RFID reader, already deployed at global retailer METRO Group, and RFIDeploySM, a set of RFID analysis, implementation and testing services. In March, Intermec announced release of its Intellitag® Gen 2 technology, next-generation RFID that allows users to take full advantage of the capabilities of Generation 2. "The introduction of Generation 2 RFID products gives customers access to the RFID system capabilities they have most requested without being limited by costly and complicated mixed-protocol environments," said Intermec President Tom Miller. "Generation 2 interoperability and global capabilities make it ideal for true global supply-chain execution."
"Impinj and Intermec are building on our established RFID expertise to develop and introduce high-performance RFID systems," said Dr. William Colleran, Impinj president and chief executive. "Our introduction of interoperable Gen 2 products will catalyze the industry and spur deployment of RFID systems that finally deliver the performance end users require."
Generation 2 RFID technology offers read/write capability, improved security and read rates that are up to 10 times faster than current EPC RFID standards in stringent radio-regulated environments such as Asia and Europe. It also provides up to 50 times less reader interference at close operating distances.
The Intermec IF5 is the industry's first intelligent reader certified under current regulations by both the FCC and ETSI, designed for use by customers around the world. The IF5 is firmware-upgradeable to Generation 2 and is the first RFID intelligent reader based on a Linux platform. Intelligent readers perform on-board decision-making – eliminating the need for a separate "edge" server connected to an RFID reader – allowing it to filter incoming RFID tag data. This capability eliminates the need for extra servers and consequential points of failure in the system, reducing both cost and risk for users.
Intermec RFIDeploy includes a set of services: process analysis to validate RFID business plans against actual and proposed processes; site analysis to verify that a company's proposed physical environment can effectively accommodate the technology; and site installation to place and test
