Impinj Introduces Zuma: Industry's Longest-Range Field Rewritable RFID Solution

Impinj, Inc., the Self-Adaptive Silicon™ company, today announced Zuma™, its high-performance Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system that delivers unprecedented features to cost-effectively enable RFID adoption within the trillion-dollar worldwide packaged goods industry. Impinj's Zuma is the world's first RFID system that enables users to write data to tags at long range, thereby greatly enhancing the functionality and value of RFID deployments in the supply chain.

Seattle, WA March 3, 2004 - Impinj, Inc., the Self-Adaptive Silicon™ company, today announced Zuma™, its high-performance Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system that delivers unprecedented features to cost-effectively enable RFID adoption within the trillion-dollar worldwide packaged goods industry. Impinj's Zuma is the world's first RFID system that enables users to write data to tags at long range, thereby greatly enhancing the functionality and value of RFID deployments in the supply chain.

Available immediately for pilot programs to validate performance, functionality and compliance with EPCglobal standards, the Zuma system utilizes RFID tags that employ Impinj's patented Self-Adaptive Silicon technology to provide the following benefits:

Features and Benefits Include:

  • Long range writability: Makes field tag writing viable and cost-effective for the first time.
  • Lockable, rewritable memory: Improves supply chain efficiency by providing accurate, secure data when and where required.
  • "Kill" feature: Addresses privacy concerns with ability to quickly and permanently destroy tag contents.
  • Low cost: Enables economical deployments of RFID systems today.

"The Zuma RFID system will turbo-charge an already exciting market," said Dimitri Desmons, Impinj's director of RFID products. "The response from customers who have had early access to the Zuma system has been extremely positive because they recognize this significant step toward the widespread deployment of RFID in their warehouse operations."

Zuma's unique long-range rewritability enables Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to develop pilot deployments quickly and inexpensively because these RFID implementations can more closely mimic existing barcode systems. For example, information can be written on the same tag at any point in the supply chain where additional bar code labels are typically used today. In addition, Zuma's rich feature set anticipates functionality from future RFID standards so that OEMs can future-proof their investments by launching pilots with Zuma today.

Many applications such as passport control, transportation and industrial automation have benefited greatly by exploiting read and write features from older RFID systems. "Reliable, field rewritability will be a key feature for the future of RFID adoption," said Christopher Boone, Program Manager for Retail/Wholesale/CPG research at IDC. "Using tag memory to access localized data from tags and to write new data to tags at the edge of the RFID network will provide additional value and foster broad-based acceptance of this emerging supply chain solution."

Impinj's Zuma system will be ready for mass deployment in June, 2004. To learn more, visit Impinj at the RFID Journal Live! Tradeshow, March 29-30 in Chicago: www.rfidjournallive.com.
